A mixed bag but still worth every penny.Yes, I agree with Mr. Jensens review. This one is a mixture. Johnny & Edgar do a duet on Please Come Home For Christmas, and strangely enough, Bon Jovi also did the same song almost simultaneously, and released it as a single at the end of that same year. Of course, Johnny & Edgar had been doing this song together probably since they were 10 yrs old...their version is beautiful.
There are some occasions where Johnny appears to be going through the motions, but then there's the brainstorming slow blues ,--- You keep tellin' me that you are leavin',--- what a gem! The lyrics are so true to life, but also humourous, the guitar work will rip the paint off your Pontiac. It's dynamic!
Check out her mama is another high point. You wouldn't be disappointed n buying this one. It was almost a continuation of Johnnys last c.d. Let Me In, and he did really well in keeping the same feel.A somewhat bland albumI have several of Johnny Winter's records, and I usually enjoy his works, especially the bluesy stuff. But this one was a bit of a disappointment.
It's not that these fourteen songs are bad, most of them are just mediocre...a couple of generic rock n' roll tunes, and some equally unimaginative blues. The musicianship is excellent as always, and a few tracks do live up to Winter's high standarts, most notably the fine acoustic slide guitar number "Blues This Bad", and cover versions of "No More Doggin'" and Willie Dixon's "I Got My Brand On You". But "Hey Where's Your Brother" ultimately ends up being a mediocre album...not a bad one, sure, but a rather forgettable one.So fineThey don't call him "Johnny Guitar" for nothing. Really tasty guitar work, really nicely recorded. I also recommend "Nothing But the Blues", but this might be an even better disk. |
