A really really really really good album ok? I cringe when I read reviews about the vocals on this album. People , rock n roll is supposed to be cracked at the edges and a little frayed , they're not meant to sound like opera singers. The voice carries the power and the emotion of the music and a strained vocal only enhances the piece. The vocals complement the whole. Don't listen to it just once and judge it, play it 3-4 times. This is a fine work of art and a very emotional joy ride of a rock album. I can't believe how good it is . Great, but could have been better with a different vocalistI ordered this and waited weeks for delivery. It was worth it though. This is a great album, with one caveat: Jeff Magnum's voice is, to put it charitably, "strained". It cracks and breaks at the worse times, particularly on "Two Headed Boy". Not the best instrument for his material, and I'd love to hear ITAOTS redone with another vocalist. That said however, this is still one of my favourites, one I listen to repeatedly. I'm in my mid-fifities and lately I've discovered bands I'd never heard of that are really good, bands which reference music that I liked in the 60s and 70s. Among these are NMH, Apples in Stereo, and my current fave The Sadies. Buy this album folks, it's better than a lot of the stuff I liked back then, and most of the stuff out now. It takes a few listenings to get into, but once you do.... Enjoy. Very good but not earth-shatteringI bought this on the strength of other reviewers' hyperbole. And while I won't say that it was money entirely wasted - on the contrary, it is a quirky and likeable concoction, sort of Richard & Linda Thompson (circa 'I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight') spliced with mid-period Mercury Rev; an unusual pop experience - nevertheless, my universe is emphatically NOT turned on its head. Buy and enjoy...but let's keep things in perspective. |
