Good stuff from Hooker's best periodThis may look like a second-rate box set, but it actually draws from John Lee Hooker's best period, his classic 50s and 60s Vee-Jay sides, which produced some of his most accessible and enjoyable singles ("Dimples", "Hobo Blues", "Blues Before Sunrise", "Big Legs, Tight Skirt", "Time Is Marchin'", "It Serves Me Right To Suffer"). Not everything you'll ever want to hear from that period is here, and Tomato's two discs covering the same period and titled "The Early Years vol. I-II remain the best overview of the Hook's Vee-Jay years, but this is actually a good place to get a lot of great stuff all at once. |
