Slide Guitar & Blues - a tasty mixI think that this CD is incredible. The lyrics and the slide, along with the National Steel make this a CD that everyone who likes the blues should have in their collection. My favorite cuts are "Hell at Home" (reminds me of what it's like to be young, in love, and confused) and "Juke Box Mama" (sounds like a "live" recording where the guitar amp is bleeding into the vocal mic.) Just beautiful.Slide masterNo one blends Cajun grooves and Delta slide like Sonny Landreth. Whether digging into a bouncy, two-beat rhythm or laying down a loping rub shuffle, he makes his Strat wheeze and sing like the mutant offspring of a button accordion and fiddle. Landreth has chops to burn -- his lines often tumble out at jaw-dropping speed -- but he also knows how to shake a note until it dissolves into a squall of overtones. On this, his sixth solo album, Landreth keeps the vibe hot and lively. Backed by drums, bass, and occasional Hammond, he delivers chorus after chorus of snarling slide laced with jagged interval jumps and tangy dissonance. Standout tracks include "A World Away," a reverb-drenched minor blues that pays homage to Magic Sam and Jerry Byrd, and "Gone Pecan," which features ripping, throaty tones over a snappy zydeco beat. On the acoustic "Juke Box Mama," Landreth's metal-body National jumps and stutters against the drummer's ricocheting rimshots. Great bayou blues from one of the planet's most original sliders.Effortless Guitar This album pulls you in from track #1. Landreth is a master of the slide guitar. No one else quite crosses the lines of blues, country and zydeco and plays like he was born guitar in hand. Catching him live at New Orleans Rock & Bowl is not only the best show in town, it's a Louisiana cultural and musical experience. |
