just a little more loveThe band, perhaps, not the right idea. "Look At Miss Ohio" a scarifyingly precise premonition of the 2004 presidential election. "One Monkey" similarly on time. Both also eternal. "One Little Song" perfectly expressive. "I Made A Lover's Prayer" the bleedingest naked open bodhi about.4 + 1/2 stars! :)Gillian has a voice that is well suited to folk and bluegrass. She is also a talented song-writer who melds the two genres smoothly. This cd is very enjoyable to listen to, and I like all of the songs. Most of the material talks about family (mom and dad) and living. This cd is not full of a bunch of love-mush type songs. It is meaty and gritty and worth a listen.SImple Spare Americana, Beautifully Sung and PlayedThis is an album that takes a while to sink in, but once it does, it really grows on you. Only several of the songs are stand-outs, including "Miss Ohio" and "Back in Time" but the overall languid atmosphere eventually wins you over. Think of Bobby D's mid-90's roots albums As Good As I've Been to You and World Gone Wrong, only with the edges softened and the bumps smoothed, and that's what you have here. Nice two-part harmonies and tasteful instrumentation brings to life old classics such as "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor." In all, a solid entry by a group with a lot of promise. |
