There Is Much Better Gospel Out There Folks

Olabelle is not a bad band. But even quasi-soulful gospel music can be found by many better musicians. This sounds like any suburban gospel group at any suburban church. Which is fine. Don't let The Band connection fool you. It's gospel music without dirt under its fingernails.
While we're at it, their cover of "I Am Waiting" by the Rolling Stones is a bit too precious. Doesn't take much to highlite the gospel aspects of The Stones, and this song is on the hepcat end of Olabelle's demographic because it was in Rushmore. An unnecessary cover for the Starbucks crowd.
Plus one star because you can probably drink beer at their shows, which you can't do with most gospel acts. Even ones much, much better than this.

Saw it recommend on CBS's Sunday morning show

I heard this as a recommendation on Sunday morning on CBS. They reviewer compared it to the soundtrack of "O' Brother Where Art Thou?" I knew I had to buy it. This is absolutely one of my favorite cds. I've let friends (who don't really venture into other styles of music) listen to it and they love it. BUY this CD...(heck, get it used!!!) you will not be disappointed. If nothing else - reserve it at your local library...won't cost you a thing (at least it works that way in my city). ENJOY!

Modern take on old-time gospel and blues

This is a really, really good interpretation of old time gospel, blues and folk (with a Rolling Stones cover thrown in to keep you guessing) that will uplift your soul. Yes, it's white folks singing music traditionally (and more effectively) performed by african-americans, but it's still very, very good. A previous reviewer has mentioned the word "Protestant" in describing this band, however, I cannot find any statement of this group's spiritual beliefs. In fact, it is their silence on that subject that explains why this is so powerful. Many Christians musicians emphasize the message over the music. Few concentrate on the music and let the message come through with its own power. Ollabelle concentrate on the music. If you like to find your gospel music in untraditional places (outside of contempory Christian) this is for you.
