Conventional.I've heard this a thousand times before. Your usual sort of indie-rock beats, your usual emotional swoons and occasional electric beats. Oh, and WOW, they have a female singer... Right. The fact is people, this isn't half as interesting as the people below me crack it up to be. So, I started wondering after hearing this... Why? Why could it be that people overrate this so heavily? Then I noticed: They're from Montreal. Everything that comes out of Canada or Iceland MUST be good, right? Well, that's just not true. Believe it or not, Canada is capable of making junk as much as Iceland is (Mugison, anyone?). But please, keep liking things as soon as you hear where they're from. Keep being just exactly what Stars' "Set Yourself on Fire" is: Boring and pretentious.God Bless CanadaYup, it's official. I love this album. There are a few tracks I could do without... but at the same time, I suppose I could see those growing on me. This album has it all, though. Lush orchestrations. Driving beats. Tasteful splashes of electronica. Epic swells of emotional grandeur. Cathartic lyrics. And a chick with a dreamy voice (she frequently reminds me of the girl from Camera Obscura). I can see this record dominating my stereo for months to come. I might even come back and change my rating to 5 stars if those handful of tracks grow on my like I think they might.Their next stepIt's good to see a very good band getting the recognition they deserve. I like this new album, but it does not stack up to "Heart". The production on this album is an improvement, but the songs on Heart are better. There is no "Elevator Love Letter" on this album. If you like this album, buy Heart immediately. |
