Surprisingly Easy to Hear

Generally, the subject of childhood horror would send me running. I don't listen to music to get depressed. However, this music doesn't have that effect on me. I think that this album works because it is, in a sense, celebratory. It celebrates those joyful moments amid childhood chaos, it celebrates standing up to crazy adult authority, and, most of all, it celebrates survival.

A really first rate CD that stands up repeated listening.

T.G.I.D.--Thank God it's Darnielle

I found John Darnielle and the Mountain Goats one day when I was of then tender age of fifteen and I was looking for mp3's on different sites. Little did I know that I would find one of the most influential bands of modern times. I listened to a clip of "Family Happiness" and I was automatically intrigued by John's beguiling voice and painfully realistic lyrics. However, my young mind was still quite attached to the punk-pop artists which so dynamically thrive in today's pop culture-Green Day, The Ataris, etcetera. However, I was still terribly, terribly entertained.

I researched Darnielle's one man band and became even more involved with his small, but fascinating, following and soon became apart of it when I purchased my first CD: Sweden. From then on, my enthusiasm for the Mountain Goats could not be abolished.

The Sunset Tree is a great symbol of growth and development from the early years of the Mountain Goats-the harsh hum of the boom-box recording is no longer prevalent and the musical tones are no longer restricted to acoustic instruments. Nonetheless, the passionate and refreshingly dynamic lyrics and ideas still remain intact.

For new listeners, all of Darnielle's songs come from personal experience, leading one to believe, truly, what kind of life this man led. This closeness to his audience gives listeners a symptomatic sort of imminence and reality when listening to the Mountain Goats.

Surely, Darnielle must be touched with some form of celestial talent, for, in my opinion, his broken melodies and passionate strumming of his guitars are a clear representation of true society. I HIGHLY recommend The Sunset Tree-it will change your life.

John Darnielle, where have you been all my life

I heard John Darnielle interviewed on NPR. Based on what he said and the performance of "Love, Love, Love", I bought the CD. When I arrived home, I listened to The Sunset Tree while I worked in the yard. Later that afternoon, I listened to this CD again, and was able to focus on the incredible lyrics. It's Tuesday, and I've been listening to this CD at least once a day since Friday. I can't get enough!!
