Get With The Stripes

"Blue Orchid" is a misleading opening track on the White Stripes' fifth album, Get Behind Me Satan. The song has the classic Stripes' electric guitar and drums sound. Set around a crunching guitar riff, Jack White sings in high falsetto to offset the power riff. But after the opener, most of the songs drop the electric guitar and are built around piano, marimba and acoustic guitar. The album's second song, "The Nurse" is easily the band's most ambitious sounding song. Combining a marimba, thundering crashes of drums and bizarre lyrics about nurses not pouring salt in your wounds, "The Nurse" sounds like nothing the band has ever done before. "My Doorbell" is rollicking, soul sounding song. It opens with a thdding bass drum, follwed by maracas and then a funky piano riff. "Little Ghost" sounds like it could be an outtake from Cold Mountain with a joyful, bluegrass sound and a fun duet between Mr. White and Meg White. Ms. White sings the under one-minute "The Denial Twist" which is notable for the bizarre refrain "you need to know the difference between a father and a lover". "As Ugly As I Seem" has an echoey sound with a curt acostic guitar rif and conga beat. "Red Rain" has Zeppelinesque guitar sound that breaks up the quiet mood. The late Rita Hayworth appears in the lyrics of two songs, "White Moon" and "Take, Take, Take" which is a stinging tale about greed and celebrity. Renee Zelleweger doesn't appear by name, but Mr. White is most likely singing about the breakup of his relationship with the Oscar winning actress in the album's closer, "I'm Lonely (But I'm Not That Lonely Yet), a country heartbreak song. Get Behind Me Satan is the White Stripes' most artistic leap forward and the band shows that they are one of the most original bands in music.

Disappointing at first, but it gets better with every listen

Get Behind Me Satan, follow-up to 2003's Elephant, delivers another 13 tracks of originality and experimentation that you would expect from the White Stripes. Upon first listen, I was bored with it. Everytime I listen to this album it gets better though, and I notice things that I didn't the last time. Now it seems like a lot of people are dogging this album because Jack White doesn't play guitar as much. While we all have to love his skills on the guitar, any real Stripes fan knows the diversity and creativity they put into each and every album and looks forward to what they bring each time. They put a piano and marimba in, and it works wonderfully. So for anybody wanting to hear another Elephant or White Blood Cells, go listen to those albums because it is a little different here.

I have listened to this album in its entirely at least 20 times, and I can honestly say there is not a bad track on here (except Passive Manipulation which is filler). Blue Orchid starts the album off with a bang, an excellent song sure to be classic. The Nurse follows, complete with marimba and a guitar solo. That is a strange track but a pleasant surprise. The Doorbell is track 3, probably the catchiest and most fun song on the album. Forever For Her might be my favorite here. It is the best ballad by the Stripes in my opinion and it is a highlight here to say the least. Little Ghost has a bluegrass sound that I don't care for, but it is lowly growing on me. I think it is one of the weakest links on this album though. Other great tracks include The Denial Twist, White Moon, Red Rain and As Ugly As I Seem.

The final verdict in my opinion is this: the album falls short of White Blood Cells greatness, but I am partial to that album (one of my favorite ever). Even still, this is a 5 star album. Amazing seeing how it was recorded in two weeks. Get Behind Me Satan displays a couple of true artists who are growing musically and creatively through each album, and they are cementing themselves as one of the best bands around today. Definately pick this album up and listen carefully, I can't recommend it enough.

no guitar, no good

A little dissapointed by the fact that jack white (one of the best guitarists around)decided to bore us with his piano, mirambs, and acoustic snoozers. Really some of these songs will put you to sleep. Although blue orchid, doorbell, and denial twist are good songs, there are just too many boring ballads, wierd experiments, and especialy bad lyrics in this album.
